Safer Cleaning Tips
  1. Ventilate When you're cleaning make sure your home is well ventilated – even in the winter. Don't spray lots of cleaning products around with the windows shut. Let your home breath and help keep the air in your home fresh and clean too.

  2. Wipe up After spraying cleaning chemicals, as a general rule, it's always a good idea to wet a cloth with warm water and wipe the surfaces – to help keep them residue free.

  3. Avoid using chemical air fresheners, especially plug in varieties that release a constant fragrance into your living space. They may leave your home smelling nice but at what cost? These guys are full of toxic chemicals that you're releasing into your home throughout the day. Pick a non-toxic air freshener or try burning aromatherapy oils –it's much safer natural alternative.

  4. Smell test If something smells pretty toxic it usually is – cleaners should not burn your nose or your skin. Some cleaning chemicals can literally bowl you over. Listen to your sense of smell and remind yourself that it doesn't have to smell toxic to do the trick.

  5. Know your chemicals Don't be afraid to ask manufacturers for ingredient listings. All products should have an 0800 number on the back label. Chemical cleaners don't need to have ingredients listed and often include smelling fragrances to mask more toxic smells. If you're worried, ask the manufacturer to list the ingredients in their products or pick products that are straight up and list ingredients on pack.

  6. Colour doesn't count. It doesn't need to be bright blue or green to clean your loo. Added dyes are unnecessary and have a harmful impact on the environment.

  7. Cut back on cleaners. Some jobs can be done just as effectively with half the amount of spray. Try to limit the number of sprays or the amount of product you use, it will work just as effectively, make your cleaners last longer and help make for a more natural environment in your home.

  8. Spray on to a damp cloth rather than directly onto a surface to keep the spray contained – especially if you're cleaning up high.

  9. Wash your dishcloth. These guys are one of the worst offenders when it comes to harbouring germs and bacteria. Throw your dishcloth in the washing machine at least once a week or alternate every couple of days.

  10. Pick a microfiber cloth for cleaning and dusting. Using this special fibre can reduce the consumption of cleaning chemicals in your home by up to 90% and also helps to capture dust more effectively.
